The ESR is the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) sink to the bottom (sedimentation) of a tube in one hour [ 3, 4 ]. The main factors affecting ESR are hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells in your blood) and blood proteins, such as fibrinogen [ 5 ].
